My Story
I first became interested in Alexander Technique on hearing references to it being useful for musicians and singers, among other things. At the time, I was having trouble with holding my fiddle comfortably & reaching certain notes. This was frustrating as it was hampering my enjoyment of something I really loved doing. I was experiencing quite a lot of tension and stiffness in my shoulders and back. Some experts suggested exercises that should help but I wasn’t having any success with my efforts in that direction. I was also somewhat stuck on a personal level at the time, and looking for something to help me move forward in my life.
I was very attracted to the emphasis in the Alexander Technique of going to the root of many of our problems – to our thinking (our concepts, beliefs, ideas about ourselves and the world in which we live) and to the idea that by changing our thinking, we can learn to change how we move and direct ourselves. I had heard Alexander Technique described as a catalyst for change and personal development, and became curious to learn more.
Little did I realise however, when I attended a weekend workshop in Dublin in 2008, the impact this work would have not only on my musical life but on every aspect of my life. I discovered many unexpected benefits, which have truly changed my life for the better. I’m calmer, more confident, I think more clearly and move with greater ease. I also enjoy more engaged performances on stage and am happier in general than I was before I started this work.
If I were to pick one particular benefit that stands out however from the rest, it is my experience of improvement rather than deterioration now as I move through my life. I believe this to be possible for anyone who will do this work.
In order to share the benefits of Alexander Technique with others, I undertook a 4 year teacher training course in the Interactive Teaching Method (ITM) approach in Bristol, UK.
I teach from my home in Dublin 1. I am available to travel to give workshops and lessons also. Please see Lessons for more info on locations, rates, etc.
